Deere & Ault staff (formerly with Engineering Science & Construction) was retained by the Chelan County Public Utility District (PUD) to provide planning, design and engineering during construction for modifications to the Chelan Dam.
As part of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) relicensing agreement, the project was required to provide a new low level outlet and flows between 80 and 500 cfs to reach the Chelan River that has been dry since construction of the hydropower project in the 1920’s.
The low level outlet was designed with deep water inlet modifications to the existing intake for temperature control, and an 84 inch diameter welded steel pipe tapped into an existing 17-foot diameter steel penstock stub.
The 84-inch diameter pipeline extends to an outlet structure with a 84 x 60-inch bifurcation, twin 60-inch diameter gate valves and twin 60-inch diameter modulating sluice gates.
