Welsh Reservoir is a dam rehabilitation project located on the western slope of Colorado near Wolcott.
A view of the dam with work in progress.
The dam is classified as a Significant Hazard Class Dam by the Office of the State Engineer. The reservoir has a storage capacity of approximately 110 acre-feet. The project includes the rehabilitation of a deteriorated outlet works and mitigation of seepage and slope stability issues. Installation of the new outlet works requires a complete breach of the dam embankment and a controlled fill reconstruction of a significant portion of the dam.
Deere & Ault is providing design services and construction engineering for the project.
Project challenges include coordination with the SEO, BLM, and Army Corps of Engineers, as well as construction in a remote, high mountain environment and project constraints due to the location of wetlands near the downstream toe of the dam.
