Deere & Ault Consultants, Inc. (D&A) provided engineering services for the Paradox West – Uravan NRD’s Hydrologic Modifications Design Project.
The plan included providing drainage around two abandoned uranium mines (site no. 6 and site no. 8) west of Paradox Colorado. The uranium mines had flow from ephemeral drainage feeding into the openings at each of the mine locations.
Paradox West Mine Site Overview.
The design required conducting a hydrologic analysis for both drainage basins to determine design flow rates. Preparation of construction plans included grading plans to provide drainage around the mine openings as well as around historically significant structures left over from the mining process before transitioning back to the existing channel.

The plans included plan and profile sheets of the drainage channel and details for the channel cross section. Tributary side channels and areas of the drainage channel with steep slopes were designed with riprap rock revetment to protect the channel from erosion. The project also included preparing technical specification and an engineer’s opinion of cost.
