Bessemer Ditch Measurement Structures

Bessemer Ditch Measurement Structures

Pueblo Colorado

In 2011, Deere & Ault Consultants, Inc. provided engineering services for the design of three new flow measurement structures on Bessemer Ditch.

Initial compacted embankment slope liner construction along the mine highwall.

Deere & Ault researched the most appropriate locations for these structures based on discussions with the ditch superintendent, proximity to existing spill structures, and proximity to other structures on the ditch. A long-throated flume was designed and installed at one location, and two Rubicon Flumes Gates were selected for installation into existing spill structures at two more locations.

To ensure that measurement accuracy is not adversely affected from submergence caused by downstream conditions, D&A performed hydraulic modeling. This modeling assisted with the design parameters of the structures, such that the structures would not cause unacceptable increases in the water surface profiles upstream.
