IKEA MSE Wall Project Southborough, Massachusetts
The Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Wall for the overflow parking lot at the IKEA
store in Southborough, Massachusetts, had developed a sliding failure.
Deere & Ault Consultants, Inc. conducted a geotechnical investigation and designed
the remedial repair required to arrest the sliding. An engineered berm was placed along
the toe of the wall. The project included the following features:
Over 700 feet of an existing MSE wall failing in sliding.
Maximum MSE wall height is 26 feet.
Maximum height berm 8 feet with a 10 foot wide crest.
Berm placed in controlled compacted lifts.
Berm slope 2H:1V with riprap erosion protection.
Extension of wall drainage system through the berm.
